FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH COLUMBUS, TX
GOING AND GROWING IN THE LORD
|
We believe the Bible to be the Word of God, divinely inspired without error and God’s revelation to
man. It is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction and for instruction in righeousness.
Psalms 19:7-11, 2 Timothy 3:15-17.
We believe in the Triune God as taught in the scriptures: God the Father; God the son who is the
Lord Jesus Christ; and God the Holy Spirit. Genesis 1:1, Joel 2:28-32; Matthew 1:20; Luke 1:35;
John 1:1,2; Ephesians 1:15-22.
We believe that the regeneration of the soul or salvation is made possible only by accepting the
finished work of the cross. The finished work of the cross is that the Lord Jesus was incarnated
as a man, born of a virgin, and died on the cross in order to satisfy the demands of a Holy God that
a sacrifice had to be made for man’s sin dept. It is this work of the cross, that Jesus shed His
precious blood, died and was buried, and was resurrected on the third day that makes salvation
possible. We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ has always been God. Accepting the finished
work of Christ invites the work of Christ into a believer’s life, which is presently carried out by the
Holy Spirit. Genesis 3:15; Matthew 16;21-26; Acts 2;21; 1 Corinthians 6:19, 20; Revelation 3:20.
We believe that man is created by God in His own image but as the result of sin is separated from
God and doomed for Hell unless one accepts God’s provision for salvation.. Genesis 1:26-30;
Genesis 2:5; Psalms 8; Romans 1:16-18; Romans 1:19-32; Ephesians 2:1-22.
We believe that salvation only occurs by placing one’s faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, and
repenting of sin that accomplishes the work of salvation. Once the work of salvation occurs in a
person’s life, this salvation can never be lost. This is the New Birth, or as Jesus said to
Nicodemus in the gospel of John, “Ye must be born again.” We believe that as a result of the New
Birth one is sanctified or set apart for God’s purpose. Thus we believe that it is essential and
imperative that a Christian grow and develop in their spiritual walk with God. Romans 3:23;
Romans 6:23; Romans 10:9,10; Romans 10:13; 1 Corinthians 6:19, 20; 2 Corinthians 5:17-20; John
6:35-40; Ephesians 4:30; John 3:7.
We believe that the New Testament church of the Lord Jesus is a local body of baptized believers
bound together by faith and fellowship in the gospel. One can become a member of this local
church by professing faith in the Lord Jesus (being born again) and following the Lord in believer’
s baptism; or one may be received for membership by providing a letter or statement that they are
a believer and have been baptized. The church is completely autonomous operating under the
leadership of the Lord Jesus, carrying out its business in a democratic process. The New
Testament speaks also of the church as the body of Christ that includes all of the redeemed of all
the ages. Its officers are pastors and deacons serving as leaders and servants. Matthew 16:15-
19; Acts 2:41,42; Ephesians 1:22,23; 1 Timothy 3:1-15; 1 Peter 5:1-5; John 3:7.
We believe that the church has two ordinances that every believer should observe. They are
Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. We believe that Baptism is an act of obedience in the newness of
life in Christ. We believe that immersion in water is the mode of baptism. The Lord’s Supper is a
symbolic act of obedience whereby the Body of Christ anticipates His future return. The bread
and fruit of the vine are symbols of the Lord Jesus Chris. Matthew 3:13-17; Acts 2:41,42; Luke 22:
7:13; Luke 22:14-20; 1 Corinthians 11:23-30.
We believe that the church should assemble on the Lord’s Day, the first day of the week. Exodus
20:8-11; Matthew 12:1,2; Acts 20:7.
We believe that the church has the responsibility to proclaim, teach and minister to the body of
Christ in an organized, effective manner. 1 Timothy1:3-7; 2 Timothy 2:15; 2 Timothy 3:14-17.
We believe in evangelism and missions as taught by the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20;
Luke 10:1-18; Acts 1:8; Romans 10:13-15.
We believe that every member of the church has a responsibility to grow in his or her Christian
walk through Bible study and prayer. It is the responsibility of the church to provide opportunities
for Christian growth and education;.. Deuteronomy 4:1,5,8,14; Psalms 110:11; Proverbs 4:1-10; 2
Timothy 3:14-17; James 1:5.
We believe that every believer has the responsibility of stewardship y supporting the local church
with tithes and offerings on a regular basis. We believe that every member has an obligation to
serve Christ with his or her time, talents, spiritual gifts, and material possessions. Genesis 14:20;
Malachi 3:8-12; Luke 12:16-21; 2 Corinthians 8:9; Philippians 4:10-19.
